"This Is How We Roll" - New StreetSmarts Bicycle Safety Program for Schools
Street Smarts, the Safe Routes to School program for the City of Davis is pleased to once again offer schools a FREE assembly program presented by Shows That Teach. THIS IS HOW WE ROLL is an interactive indoor multi-media show that uses live stories and demonstration mixed with short YouTube/SnapChat-style video content projected on a screen with live audience participation that will engage elementary and junior high school students. Our goal is to motivate kids to walk and cycle safely to school and beyond. “Our city is fortunate to have grant funding to provide quality bike and pedestrian education in a fun and interactive way that resonates with school-aged community members,” states Robb Davis.
This Is How We Roll will cover the following important topics:
- The benefits of walking and cycling (fun, health, and environmental)
- The importance of paying attention while walking or cycling
- Cycling safety (wearing a helmet and more)
- Path/street safety and etiquette (hand signals, looking left, right, left, and passing on the left)
- Being visible to drivers and other path users
Please contact your school to learn when they will be hosting the assembly this spring as part of our citywide May Is Bike Month festivities. The assemblies are part of a month-long celebration of safe and fun active transportation in Davis, including bike rodeos, contests, Bike to School Day, the Loopalooza, and more!
Funding for this bike and pedestrian safety program is provided by an Active Transportation Program grant received by the City of Davis in 2015. For more information on this and other Safe Routes to School programs, please visit cityofdavis.org/saferoutes
