How do you celebrate 101 years?
Al Beckett celebrated with cake and 101 candles!
Al has lived at University Retirement Community for the last 13 years, and he's 101. He is the oldest resident at URC.
Al was born in a little town in New Jersey; though his parents were quite poor, he was determined to go to college, and graduated in 1937 from Trenton State College. Al worked his way through college with lots of crazy part-time jobs like taking stenography at the Lindbergh kidnapping trial. He taught business at North Arlington High School until he joined the army in WWII and was stationed at Fort Ord doing payroll for the Pacific Theater. He met Betty in Monterey and married after the war. They moved back to the east coast to complete his doctorate. He later returned to CA and taught at San Jose State until 1986. He won many teaching awards and was a fighter against racism and sexism on behalf of his students and colleagues. He's still in touch with students, many of whom came from all over the country for his 100th birthday celebration. Al and Betty moved to Davis in 2004 to be closer to family. Betty passed away in 2014, and is much missed.
Happy Birthday Al!
