Mandela Event

Post Date:August 07, 2017 10:30 a.m.

Mandela Fellowship group shotEarlier this summer (July 27, 2017) the City of Davis hosted members of the Young African Leaders Initiative's (YALI) of the Mandela Fellowship program. YALI is a program initiated by former President Obama that empowers young people through academic coursework, leadership training, and networking. Fellows work with a U.S. higher education institution and receive support for professional development once they return home.

The City of Davis' Open Space and Urban Forestry Divisions hosted an event in Woodbridge Park attended by 25 young adults from 17 African nations from the Mandela Fellowship who work in the energy industry. The event taught young tree pruning and care, and serviced many trees in the park and surrounding neighborhood. The benefits of a tree canopy on energy conservation was also discussed. For example, did you know that shade from a tree canopy can reduce energy used on cooling by 30% annually? Or that our current California canopy saves us 6,400 GWh/yr, the equivalent of about 100 megawatt power plants?!? The City of Davis is glad to have hosted fellows on YALI and welcomes the opportunity to participate again.
