Small Artists Communicate Big Ideas

Annual Street Smarts Poster Contest Winners to be Announced

Post Date:December 05, 2017 1:44 p.m.

Back by popular demand…Aspiring artists will show off their Street Smarts in the City of Davis Street Smarts Traffic Safety Poster Contest. For this year’s theme Rule the Road! Have Fun. Be Safe. Help the Planet.

Elementary school students were asked to create original artwork illustrating the importance of proper helmet use, using lights at night, safe bicycle riding, crossing the street safely, and safe driving—including awareness about distracted driving and the dangers of talking or texting while on the road.

Continuing with the success of previous shows, all entries in the contest will be displayed in an exhibit at the Davis Arts Center. In addition to artwork, educational materials addressing the most common traffic safety issues for children and families will help support the mission of the City’s Street Smarts program—a Safe Routes to School program supporting bicycle, pedestrian, and driver safety education.

The finalists and Grand, Second and Third Prize winners will be announced and celebrated at an Art Opening on Friday, December 8, 2017 at the Davis Arts Center, 1919 F Street. The opening will run from 5:00 -7:00 p.m.  At 5:30 p.m., Mayor Robb Davis will participate in a brief award ceremony to honor these young artists.

Prizes will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in three categories (K-3rd, 4th-6th and 7th-9th grades). Each artist who entered the contest and attends the award ceremony will also receive a small prize.

There has been an incredible outpouring of donations from local businesses who wanted to support the program. Prizes were donated by the Fleet Feet, Rocknasium, Inspire Martial Arts, Yolo Berry Yogurt, the Davis Arts Center, and The Paint Chip, who will once again frame the winning artwork.

“We are impressed with the entries this year, and as always are looking forward to sharing the artwork with the community, and grateful for the local program support,” said Mayor Robb Davis.

All artwork will be available to view at the Davis Arts Center, 1919 F Street, from December 8-16, 2017.  The winning artwork will also be posted on the Street Smarts website later in December, and incorporated into Street Smarts marketing materials during the upcoming year.
