In October 2017, the owners of the Nishi property submitted a preliminary conceptual site plan and project narrative for development on the site. The focus of the project is providing student housing, including an affordable component. The narrative notes that vehicle access would be through a crossing under the Union Pacific Railroad tracks to the UC Davis campus. Vehicle trips would be reduced, and the elimination of private automobile to west Olive Drive would need to be explored. The project also includes open space, potentially a farm to provide produce for UC Davis students, and surface parking with opportunities for photovoltaics.
