Most businesses in Davis have recycling carts located in or near their trash enclosures. There are two different recycling carts: one for mixed paper and one for plastic, glass and metal containers. Cardboard should be flattened and stacked on the ground for pick-up next to the recycling carts or garbage bins. Some businesses have a bin for cardboard—please be sure to flatten your cardboard before placing in the bin.

AB 341 – Mandatory Commercial Recycling

California State law AB 341 requires all businesses that generate 4 or more cubic yards of waste each week and all multi-family communities with 5 or more units to have recycling service. If your business falls under AB 341 and does not have recycling service, there are two simple options available to meet the requirements of State law:

  1. Contact Davis Waste Removal (756-4646) to request recycling carts (no extra charge for this service).
  2. Arrange to collect and donate, sell and/or self-haul recyclables to recycling facilities as allowed under Davis Municipal Code 32.01.030.

For more information, see the Mandatory Commercial Recycling Guide  or visit the CalRecycle Mandatory Commercial Recycling webpage.

AB 1826: Mandatory Organics Recycling

In October of 2014, Governor Brown signed AB 1826, requiring businesses to recycle their organic waste on and after April 1, 2016, depending on the amount of waste they generate per week.

  • April 1, 2016: Businesses that generate eight cubic yards of organic waste per week shall arrange for organic waste recycling services.
  • January 1, 2017: Businesses that generate four cubic yards of organic waste per week shall arrange for organic waste recycling services.
  • January 1, 2019: Businesses that generate four cubic yards or more of commercial solid waste per week shall arrange for organic waste recycling services.

The City sent out a notification letter in January 2016 and included a letter from CalRecycle regarding AB 1826. Starting July 2016, all customers will receive organics collection service through Davis Waste Removal.  More information on the Organics Collection Program.

Recycling Is Easy As 1, 2, 3!

  1. Easy to see: Recycling should be convenient and obvious. Easy-to-read labels are extremely important. Consider purchasing clear containers that allow people to see what can be placed inside. Specialized lids that limit what can be placed inside can further reduce contamination of recyclables.
  2. Easy to find: Place a recycling container next to each garbage receptacle to prevent recyclables from ending up in the trash. Be sure the trash and recycling containers are clearly labeled.  Place paper recycling bins next to desks, copy machines, printers, fax machines and mailboxes. Place recycling bins for bottles and cans in break rooms, near vending machines and near refrigerators.
  3. Easy to remember: Let your staff know where your recycling containers are and encourage them to place recyclables in the proper place. Integrate recycling information into your new employee training and have quick recycling reminders during staff meetings.
