Davis Wetlands Docent Program
The City of Davis and the Yolo Basin Foundation together implement the Davis Wetlands Docent program. Docents are provided with training (classroom and field) on subjects regarding the Wetlands operation, pollution prevention, plant and wildlife identification, habitat types, and how to lead an effective interpretive tour. Training occurs annually in February. Docent tours occur the first Saturday of the month and are typically attended by 20-30 people. Docents work as teams to lead one or two guided public field trips to the wetlands during the year. This is a great opportunity to learn about wetland habitat and wildlife of the Central Valley and meet fellow outdoor enthusiasts.

Apartment Move-Out Waste Reduction Program
Every year the City of Davis Recycling Program teams up with local apartment managers to encourage reuse of items and reduce the amount of waste generated from apartment turnover in August. City of Davis Recycling staff and volunteers set up donation stations at participating apartment properties, and residents are encouraged to donate items they no longer want or need instead of throwing them in the trash. Local non-profit groups and other apartment residents stop by and take items they want—it’s like a free community garage sale. The end result is that good, usable items are kept out of the landfill. Volunteers will be assigned a cluster of 1-10 apartments to organize and maintain the donation stations. This event occurs the last two weeks of August. Program staff will meet with volunteers to assign apartments and provide training.
For more information view our Apartment Move-Out Waste Reduction Program page.
Pond Clean up Day
The City of Davis stormwater detention/ habitat basins function to reduce flooding, clean stormwater, and provide important wetlands habitat. During the winter and spring, trash such as cans, bottles, balls, and food wrappers get washed off the streets and into the basins. As a pond clean-up volunteer, you’ll protect, enhance, and help increase awareness about the drainage ponds’ function and the wildlife that use them. All ages are welcome. Clean up days typically occur annually in the late summer or early fall.
Bicycle and Pedestrian Program
The Bicycle and Pedestrian Program holds several annual events, one-time special projects and data gathering efforts throughout each year. Event volunteers may be asked to set-up/clean-up events, run registration tables, direct participants in specific activities, contribute technical expertise (such as bicycle mechanic skills), contact partner groups, or a myriad of other tasks. Special projects and data collection volunteers may be asked to travel around town, engage community members, contribute technical expertise (such as graphic design or computer programming), or other tasks. If you are interested in being added to an on-call list of volunteers for any of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Program activities, please email pwweb@ucdavis.edu and put “Bicycle Pedestrian volunteer” in the subject line.
