October 22, 2009 – Davis Named Start City for 2010 AMGEN Tour of California

Davis has been chosen to be a host city for the 2010 Amgen Tour of California bike race. On Monday, May 17, Davis will host the start of the second stage from Davis to Santa Rosa. As a 2010 host city, Davis will have been part of the Tour of California route for 4 out of its 5 years of existence.

The Amgen Tour of California is the largest cycling event in America. It features many of the world’s top professional cycling teams. Seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong’s also announced his intent to compete in the fifth-annual race along with three-time defending champion Levi Leipheimer and the 2009 second place finisher David Zabriskie.

Armstrong competed in the 2009 Amgen Tour of California and other top races around the world, including finishing third in the 2009 Tour de France. Returning to the Amgen Tour of California for the second consecutive year, Armstrong will start the 2010 season on his newly formed Team RadioShack along with Leipheimer. May 2010 promises to be memorable with the 34th annual Davis Double Century on Saturday, May 15 followed by the start of Stage 2 of the Amgen Tour of California on Monday, May 17. The starting time and specific stage route for the Tour will be announced at a later date.

Davis is also the new permanent home of the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame. The museum will open some time after November 7 and will feature Hall of Fame memorabilia and bicycles from the historic Pierce Miller bicycle collection. Davis also hosted the 2008 Hall of Fame Induction Dinner and will do so again on November 7, 2009 at Freeborn Hall.
