December 14, 2009 – City of Davis Commission Recruitments

The City of Davis is looking for volunteers to serve as members of the following commissions:

  • Business & Economic Development (1 regular vacancy)
  • Historical Resources Management (1 alternate vacancy)
  • Open Space & Habitat (1 regular vacancy)
  • Safety & Parking Advisory (1 alternate vacancy)
  • Social Services (1 regular vacancy)
  • Tree Commission (1 regular vacancy)

By serving on a city commission, you can participate in local government and help plan the future of Davis. Commissions serve as a conduit for citizen input – a way of gathering, analyzing and recommending options to the City Council. Commissions provide an important avenue for determining the community’s feelings about an issue and extending the reach of the democratic process. Individuals who serve on the city’s commissions are among the most respected and appreciated volunteers in the community. A great deal of personal satisfaction, knowledge and experience may be gained through service to your community.

If you are interested in serving on a commission and are a resident of Davis, please fill out an application. Applications may be picked up at the City Clerk’s Office at City Hall, 23 Russell Boulevard, Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., downloaded, or call 757-5648 and an application will be mailed to you. Feel free to include a resume or other information to help the City Council in the selection process. Submitted applications are considered public information. Applications are submitted to City Council for appointment at a regular Council meeting; appointments are tentatively scheduled for February 2, 2010.

Application deadline: January 22, 2010

Application deadlines are established to allow City Council time to review the applications thoroughly. No late applications will be submitted to City Council.

BUSINESS AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION

The Business and Economic Development Commission advises City Council on all matters relating to business and economic development. Activities include identification of constraints and incentives to economic development; direction on business recruitment, representation on business outreach visits to existing businesses; educating the community on the importance of economic development appropriate to Davis; and monitoring of sales tax leakage. Meets the fourth Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m., Davis Joint Unified School District Conference Room, 526 B Street.

HISTORICAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENT COMMISSION

The Historical Resources Management Commission advises City Council on matters pertaining to historical resources, maintains an inventory of historical resources, recommends the designation of historical resources and reviews applications for alteration permits for historical structures. In order for the Commission to comply with Certified Local Government Guidelines, the Commission is recruiting applicants with special interest, competence, experience or knowledge in historic preservation and the cultural heritage of Davis and professional qualifications in such fields as the following: architecture, history, architectural history, prehistoric and historic archeology, urban planning, law, real estate, folklore, museum curation, conservation, landscape architecture, American studies and cultural geography. Meetings are held on the third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m., Hattie Weber Museum, 445 C Street.

SAFETY AND PARKING ADVISORY COMMISSION

The Safety Advisory Commission advises the City Council on ways to improve existing accident prevention programs or implement new programs in order to reduce untimely deaths, crippling injuries and economic losses caused by traffic accidents. The Commission reviews and makes recommendations on traffic safety proposals and parking issues, including such items as speed limits and appropriate regulatory warning devices. Meets the first Thursday of each month at 5:00 p.m., Community Chambers, 23 Russell Boulevard.

OPEN SPACE AND HABITAT COMMISSION

The Open Space and Habitat Commission advises the City Council on matters pertaining to open space issues, programs, and projects including those dealing with the habitat. The Commission monitors and facilitates the implementation of open space objectives and identifies solutions to implementation problems. Meets the first Monday of every month at 6:30 p.m., Community Chambers, 23 Russell Boulevard.

SOCIAL SERVICES COMMISSION

The Social Services Commission advises the City Council on matters pertaining to issues of social services including health, affordable housing, homelessness, hunger, transit, low income needs, and Federal and State grant programs such as Community Development Block Grant and Home Investment Partnership Program. Meets the third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m., Community Chambers, 23 Russell Boulevard.

TREE COMMISSION

The Tree Commission establishes rules and regulations relating to the planting, care and maintenance of trees and other plants which overhang public streets, and makes recommendations to City Council on all street tree removal requests. Meets the third Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m., Davis Police Department, 2600 Fifth Street.
