Lifeguard Training Courses

Learn the skills you need to prevent and respond to emergencies in and around the water. This course includes Lifeguard Training/First Aid, CPR/AED for Lifeguards and First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22). Participants must attend all class sessions and pass the skills/written tests in order to receive certifications.

Prerequisites:
Minimum age of 15 and must be able to pass a skills test in swimming (swim 300 yards) on the first class meeting.

Lifeguard Training

Lifeguarding Challenge

Do you know your stuff? This course gives you the opportunity to renew your lifeguard certification without having to retake the whole course! In the lifeguard challenge course, you will be tested on all of the necessary life-saving skills taught in the American Red Cross lifeguarding course. This includes, but is not limited to: CPR/AED skills, water rescue skills, spinal injury treatment, written exams, and first aid. You must have a prior lifeguard certification to take this course.

Upon successful completion of course requirements, participants will receive the following certifications:

  • Lifeguard Training & First Aid (valid for 2 years)
  • CPR/AED for Lifeguards (valid for 2 years)

Prerequisites:

  • Current certifications or ones that have not been expired for more than 12 months. Individuals that do not possess these certificates may not participate in the review course. Participants will need to bring their original certification cards to the first day of class.

CPR/AED for Lifeguards Challenge

The purpose of the CPR/AED for Lifeguards Challenge is to give individuals the opportunity to recertify the CPR/AED course. Each participant will perform skills evaluation and complete the final written exam (a minimum of 80% is required to pass the written portion). Participants must review materials prior to this class & be prepared to “test-out” on their skills.

Upon successful completion of course requirements, participants will receive the following certifications:

  • CPR/AED for Lifeguards (valid for 2 years)

Prerequisites:
Participant must bring proof of current CPR/AED for Lifeguards certification or one that has not been expired more than 12 months. Individuals that do not possess this certificate may not participate in the review course. Participants will need to bring their original certification card to the first day of class.

Lifeguarding Instructor Course (LGI)

The purpose of this American Red Cross course is to train instructor candidates to teach basic-level Lifeguarding, CPR/AED for Lifeguards, Bloodborne Pathogens and Basic Water Rescue courses. This course prepares instructor candidates to use course and presentation materials, conduct training sessions and evaluate the progress of candidates in a professional-level course. Participants must successfully pass a Lifeguard Training Challenge on the first day of class (written and skills tests) in order to continue with this course.

Upon successful completion of this course, candidates will be certified to teach American Red Cross Lifeguard Training classes. Participants must attend all scheduled sessions.

Pre-requisites:

  • Minimum age of 17.
  • Possess a Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT) certificate.
  • Successfully complete the precourse session (written exam and precourse skills and scenarios).
  • Current Lifeguard Training/First Aid and CPR/AED for lifeguards certification or one that has not been expired for more than 12 months. Individuals that do not possess these certificates may not participate in the course. Participants will need to bring their original certification cards to the first day of class.

Water Safety Instructor Training (WSI)

If you are at least 16 years old and a proficient swimmer, you can become an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor. This course will help you:

  • Teach skills that may save a life.
  • Gain terrific work experience as an aquatics professional.
  • Earn money while you help people learn valuable skills.
  • Learn organizational and presentation skills that will help you in any career.
  • Make a difference in peoples’ lives.

Whether you want to splash around with kids and teach them to swim, help children and adults refine their strokes or teach diving safety techniques, you can do it as an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor.

Prerequisites:

  • Minimum age of 16.
  • Successfully complete instructor course skills pretest consisting of water safety and swimming skills.
  • Participants must attend all scheduled sessions and pass all skills/written tests in order to receive certification.

Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT)

This course introduces instructor candidates to the history, structure and activities of the American Red Cross. To prepare instructor candidates to teach American Red Cross specialty courses to diverse populations. To introduce instructor candidates to the policies and procedures of the American Red Cross to ensure course consistency, quality and appropriate training. Textbook is included.

This course is a prerequisite for the "Lifeguarding Instructor Course".

Prerequisites:

  • Minimum age of 16.

Basic Water Rescue

This course is designed for participants who do not need to be trained as lifeguards, but who require certification in victim recognition and general first aid topics. The class includes an in-water skills session to practice basic water rescue techniques, designed to assist victims and keep them face-up until more help arrives. This course is excellent for camp counselors, health and fitness facility employees, foster parents, child providers, and others who are around water on a regular basis.

Prerequisites:

  • None, although participants should be comfortable in chest-deep water.
  • Participants must attend all scheduled sessions and pass all skills/written tests in order to receive certification.

Course Certification
Payment of the course fee is not a guarantee of certification. Basic Water Rescue certification is valid for three years. To be eligible for course certification you must:

  • Be present for the entire course.
  • Successfully complete all required skills.
  • Pass a multiple choice written exam at 80% or better.
