Third Street Improvement Project Artist Opportunity
The City of Davis is seeking to commission a professional artist or team of artists to assist with the design and development of public art as part of the Third Street Improvement Project. There will be two phases to the project.
- The selected artist/team will work with the design team on the project to develop concepts for public art pieces. The selected artist will receive a stipend of $3500.
- If project construction is approved by City Council, the selected artist will then design and install the approved public art pieces. This budget is up to 2% of the construction costs from eligible funding sources and is estimated to be $35,000. This budget includes all costs such as artist’s fees, travel, shipping, fabrication and installation.
Background and Location:
Third Street between A Street and B Street currently functions as a primary pedestrian and bicycle corridor with vehicular access connecting UC Davis with the downtown. The intersection of Third Street and A Street accommodates over 4,000 bicycles a day and a large volume of pedestrians. However, the project area suffers from narrow sidewalks, inadequate pedestrian amenities and lighting, absence of bicycle lanes and amenities, a lack of identity and sense of place, a steeply crowned street, above-ground utility lines, and lacks contemporary drainage conveyance.
This streetscape design project will improve the safety, function, aesthetics, and sustainability of the two-block segment of the Third Street between A Street and B Street and the B Street Alley. The purpose is to improve the corridor for pedestrians and bicycles and create a gateway between UC Davis and downtown.
