Description:
This shapefile contains the Public Land Survey System (PLSS) grid of Township and Range section lines. The PLSS was the original land survey of the United States public domain that included lands ceded to the federal government by the original 13 states and acquired from Native Americans and foreign governments. The rectangular survey was developed by the Government Land Office to divide and dispose of public lands. The survey attempted to divide lands into 36-square mile townships contain 36 mile-square sections. The U. S. Bureau of Land Management is responsible for maintaining the survey.

Source:

The original data was obtained from the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) as 1:100,000 scale Digital Line Graph (DLG) files. The PLSS lines in the DLG files were digitized from USGS Primary Base Quadrangle maps. The DLG files obtained by the City of Davis were converted into a ArcInfo format and projected into the California state plane coordinate system based on NAD83. The PLSS lines were further adjusted using the TRANSFORM and ADJUST commands in ArcInfo to align the sections lines to other coincident features such as county roads. Because the PLSS lines have been adjusted to fit the City of Davis GIS data sets, the PLSS lines do not meet the original source accuracy as described by the USGS.

Updating:
The PLSS layer is not maintained. It is intended to be used as a reference layer for creating maps and other cartographic projects and not for legal land descriptions or property boundary mapping. The PLSS lines may periodically be adjusted as more precise GIS layers become available in the City of Davis GIS library.
Accuracy:
Line segments were digitized initially from Primary Base Quads at national map accuracy standards. The lines have be adjusted as previously described and section corners are probably within 100 feet of their actual geographic location.
