Care Trak Rapid Recovery System

What Is Care Trak?

The Care Trak system was developed to aid in the search for missing adults or children that tend to wander from their home or facility with a diagnosis such as Alzheimer's, Autism or other brain injuries.

How Does It Work?

The water- and tamper-resistant transmitters, which are worn on the wrist or ankle, put out a constant, silent pulsating radio signal. Should its wearer become lost, police use a mobile receiver to tune in to that person's unique radio signal. Using a hand-held directional antenna, searchers determine the direction of the strongest radio signal and move in that direction until they come upon the lost child or adult. The closer they get, the stronger the signal becomes. The transmitter has a 1-mile range on the ground and 5-mile range in the air.

How Much Does It Cost?

The cost of the transmitter and testing box is $250, plus another $8 per month to replace the transmitter's battery and wristband. For those who cannot afford the cost of the transmitter, the Police Department has a limited number of the devices it will give out free of charge. To take part in the local program, families can subscribe to the service with the Davis Police Department, which will deliver the needed equipment to the subscriber's house, demonstrate how it works, and visit the home each month to help change the transmitter battery and wristband.

The Police Department also welcomes ongoing donations toward the Care Trak program that will be set aside in a separate fund "so that the program will fund itself".
