The Davis Police Department’s Bicycle Unit (DBU) is currently comprised of one full-time and 16 on-call bicycle trained Peace Officers. The DBU is considered a specialty unit within Patrol and is responsible for supporting the beat officers. Participation in the DBU is considered a voluntary collateral duty for patrol officers. The primary goal of the DBU is to provide a direct and personal police presence throughout the city while supporting the patrol officers.
The Davis Police Department currently has bicycle trained officers assigned to each shift. Additionally, bike officers are frequently requested to assist in situations that require increased mobility in remote areas not accessible by vehicle. Examples of these situations include searching and apprehending foot mobile suspects, clearing bike paths and apartment complexes, providing intelligence, and backing up officers during calls.
The DBU also plays and integral part in providing community service and awareness to the citizens of Davis. Local residents and businesses enjoy the constant presence and accessibility of DBU bike officers while on patrol. Questions and concerns can be immediately answered and clarified on scene and in person. The DBU also provides assistance during parades, bike rodeos, and special events in order to help maintain order and educate the public about bicycle safety.
