K-9 History
The K-9 Unit is a relatively new program to the Davis Police Department. After going nearly a decade without the services of police dogs, the Davis Police Department hired "Birko" in August of 2003. Birko was brought to the Davis Police Department by Officer Glenn Glasgow. Officer Glasgow and Birko had previously worked in San Carlos and came to us with experience as a canine team. Thanks to the efforts of Officer Glasgow and Birko, it became apparent that the services of a K-9 Unit in Davis were necessary. Birko worked hard and assisted with numerous arrests. Because of Officer Glasgow and Birko's hard work, the department decided to expand its K-9 Unit to include a second team.
In March of 2005, thanks to a generous grant from the Glide Foundation, the department was able to purchase "Atto". Officer Justin Raymond was selected to handle Atto and the two have been working together in Davis ever since. When it was time for Birko to retire in 2005, his vacancy was filled by K-9 Lupo. Lupo worked for the Davis Police Department, with Officer Ron Trn as his handler, for over a year before he was retired due to a minor medical issue. Soon after Lupo's retirement, the department purchased Hurricane (also known as "Cane"). Officer Trn worked with Cane for about two and a half years. Now, Officer Lee Hatfield is partnered with Cane. Lupo and Hurricane were both purchased with funds generously donated by local citizens and businesses. Cane and Atto continue to serve the City of Davis together.
