Davis Community and Emergency Information Radio Station
In 2005 the City of Davis acquired a low power AM Radio station. The station is one of several methods used by the City for providing emergency information to residents and visitors of the City of Davis. The other methods of communications the City uses include the City’s website, the Emergency Alert System (EAS) system, KDRT 95.7 FM, the City Government Channel on Comcast cable channel 16, and an automated telephone notification system.
The radio equipment was purchased from Information Station Specialists of Zeeland, Michigan and a license was obtained from the FCC. The low power station (not exceeding 10 watts) broadcasts at a frequency of 1300 kHz under call sign WQDV998. Due to the low power output, reception is better on automobile radios or radios with larger antennas, than those within buildings or with smaller or internal antennas. The station’s broadcast range is limited, and covers roughly a 5 mile radius centered on downtown Davis.
This non-commercial station is used to broadcast emergency messages, travel advisories, and information about community events. In between recorded event messages the station also re-broadcasts regional weather information from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
A solar powered flashing sign announcing the AM station frequency is located on Fifth Street in front of the fire station. The sign’s flashing lights will be activated during emergencies to notify travelers to tune to the station for current information. As funding allows, additional permanent signs will be installed at various locations in Davis. Temporary signs may also be placed in affected areas during special events or emergencies, directing people to tune to 1300 AM for information.
