     Weeds

Weeds can show up in any lawn or garden. Providing plants as competition, or mulches as barriers slows their growth.

Prevention/Management:

  • Keep lawns healthy, reseed bare areas.
  • Whenever possible cultivate and remove weeds from ground.
  • Use mulch layers and/or geotextile fabric.
  • Use corn-gluten meal as a less-toxic pre-emergent.
  • Try soil solarization (black plastic over soil heats and kills weeds).

Annual Grasses

Controls

  • More toxic: MSMA (arsenic), some chemical pre-emergents.
  • Less toxic:
- see prevention/management

Bermuda Grasses

Controls

  • More toxic: Round-Up®, (glyphosate) and others.
  • Less toxic:
- see prevention/management

Broadleaf Weeds

Controls

  • More toxic: 2,4-D+ (trimec), some chemical pre-emergents.
  • Less toxic:
- see prevention/management
