The State of California has imposed a landfill ban on all household batteries.  As of February 2006, household batteries cannot be thrown away in the trash.  The Yolo County Division of Integrated Waste Management collects household batteries and recycles them.

Members of the public can recycle 6-volt, 9-volt, AAA, AA, C, and D alkaline, lithium, and rechargeable batteries at these collection sites in Davis:

  • Davis Senior Center, 646 A Street
  • CVS Pharmacy (Longs Drug Store), 1550 E. Covell Blvd.
  • CVS Pharmacy (Longs Drug Store), 1471 W. Covell Blvd.
  • Rite Aid, 655 Russell Blvd.
  • Rite Aid,  2135 Cowell Blvd.
  • Hibbert Lumber at 5th & G Sts.
  • Davis Ace Hardware at 3rd & G Sts.

PLEASE NOTE:
All batteries must be sorted by type (alkaline, lithium and rechargeable) BEFORE you bring them to a site to be recycled. Place each type into a separate plastic baggie for easy handling. More information on battery recycling. This document is in PDF Format Kbytes

Rechargeable batteries can also be recycled at these sites in Davis:

  • Radio Shack, 634 G St.
  • Cingular Wireless, 500 1st St
  • Kragen Auto Parts, 1681 Research Park Dr.

Americans purchase approximately three billion household batteries each year, or about ten batteries per person. Household batteries contain metals that are potentially toxic, including cadmium, zinc, lithium, and nickel.  For more information about battery recycling, call (530) 666-8856.

Automotive batteries can be taken to the Yolo County Central Landfill Recycling Center for free drop-off daily during normal business hours. State law requires stores to accept your old battery upon the purchase of a new battery.
