Help Improve Bicycle Safety - Yard Waste T.L.C.

On August 24th, 2007 a letter was mailed to all utility customers asking for help to improve bicycle safety. Recently recognized as a bicycle friendly city, bicycling is a primary mode of transportation for many commuters in Davis. Sometimes the placement of yard materials may pose serious hazards to cyclists. Now you can help improve bicycle safety by giving your yard materials a little T.L.C.

  • Timing
Place yard material on the street as close to your scheduled pick-up date as possible. Check http://www.ci.davis.ca.us/pw/recycle/garbage.cfm for the pick-up schedule. Streets are usually swept the day after yard waste has been picked up.
  • Limit the size
Be aware that yard material piles can create serious hazards for cyclists; BIKE LANES SHOULD NEVER BE BLOCKED!! Each pile of yard material should be no larger than 5 feet in any dimension (sometimes even a 5x5 pile may inhibit bicycle traffic and a smaller pile may be needed), but you may have more than 1 pile. Place your yard materials 18 inches from your curb or gutter. To report hazards or other concerns visit www.cityofdavis.org or call 757-5686.
  • Composting
What's better than putting the yard material out on the street? Composting! Composting or mulch mowing returns the nutrients back into the soil, cuts down on the need for pesticides and/or fertilizers and saves water. To receive a free compost bin via the City’s compost correspondence class, contact Davis Public Works at 757-5686 or visit http://www.ci.davis.ca.us/pw/compost/

In 2007, a Green Waste Pilot Program was approved to determine the effect of containerization on bicycle safety. However, on its January 22, 2008 meeting the City Council voted to discontinue the pilot green waste containerization program. As a result of Council’s action, the pilot containerization project is not moving forward. The method of picking up green waste will not change and continue to be loose in the street in 5' x 5' piles. More information about the Green Waste Containerization Pilot Project.
