The Street Smarts Jr. High Ad Winners – 2009

2009 Street Smarts Junior High Ad Contest Winners Announced

Street Smarts has wrapped up its 2009 Junior High Ad Contest with an array of creative ads focusing on the importance of proper helmet use.

The contest called on junior high students to create print ads targeted to their peers by hand-drawing, painting or using original graphics or photos. Street Smarts received 25 entries in the contest representing a variety of visual art forms. The panel of judges, which included Davis Enterprise reporter Julie Rooney, Davis Media Access Executive Director Autumn Labbe-Renault and City of Davis Bicycle/Pedestrian Coordinator Tara Goddard, were asked to evaluate the entries on originality, visual design and composition and clear and effective communication of the proper helmet use theme.

“We really enjoyed seeing all the different approaches students used to effectively communicate the helmet safety theme,” said Street Smarts coordinator Crystal O’Hara. “It’s clear that the participants put a lot of work into researching and designing their ads and that they understand the importance of using a helmet and wearing it correctly.”

The Grand Prize winner is Emma Billings, who will receive an iPod Nano; the Second Prize winner is Gaia Mohr-Tonachini, who will receive an iPod Shuffle; and the Third Prize winner is Fallon O’Neill, who will receive a $50 Target Gift Certificate. The students’ work will be incorporated into Street Smarts marketing materials, including an upcoming Davis Enterprise ad.
