The Street Smarts Teen Traffic Essay Contest Winners – 2010
Winning Entries in Street Smarts 2010 Teen Traffic Essay Contest Announced
The City of Davis Street Smarts campaign is pleased to announce the winners of our 2010 Teen Traffic Essay Contest, which called on students in grades 7th through 12th to write original essays on the topics of pedestrian safety, proper helmet use or texting while driving.
The first place winner is Shannon Segall, an 8th grader at Emerson Junior High, for her essay “Texting and Driving Don’t Mix.” She will receive $300. The second place winner is Jane Seo, a senior at Davis Senior High, for “The Dangers of Texting Behind the Wheel.” Seo will receive $200. Third place went to DHS junior Megan Li for “Multi-tasking or Playing with Fire?” She will receive $100.
Essays were judged by representatives of Street Smarts sponsors: Dr. Rick Baker of Kaiser Permanente, Anne Ternus-Bellamy of The Davis Enterprise, and Jennifer Dowden of Nugget Markets. Essays were evaluated based on originality, expression of the traffic theme, adherence to contest rules and grammar and punctuation.
“We were very impressed with the entries we received and especially with how well the authors expressed the traffic safety themes,” said Crystal O'Hara, Street Smarts coordinator. “Each student approached the topics in his or her own unique and informative way.”
Each student who entered the contest will receive a $10 Borders gift card for their efforts.
