The Street Smarts Poster Winners – 2008
Kids Use Their Street Smarts, Creativity in Traffic Safety Poster Contest
Close to 100 Davis kids showed off their Street Smarts in the second annual City of Davis Street Smarts Poster Contest.
Students from each elementary school in Davis participated, with a total of 98 entries. Participants were asked to create original artwork focusing on the importance of safe bicycle riding, proper helmet use and/or crossing the street safely.
"We are very pleased with all the poster entries we received this year. It’s been wonderful to see the kids’ work," said Crystal O’Hara, Street Smarts coordinator.
At an Awards Ceremony held Nov. 19 at the Veterans’ Memorial Center, KCRA Traffic Pulse 3 Reporter Kristin Marshall presented the winners with their prizes.
The Grand Prize went to Sydney DaRold, a third-grader at Willett Elementary School. She received a portable DVD player. Elisa McIsaac, a sixth-grader at Patwin Elementary placed Second and received an IPod Shuffle. The Third Place winner was Camila Ortiz, a Willett Elementary sixth-grader, who received a $50 Target gift certificate.
"Our three winners did an outstanding job. The judges felt, and I agree, that they clearly demonstrated their understanding of the importance of traffic safety and we were very impressed with their creativity," O’Hara said.
The Grand, Second and Third Place posters will be displayed at City Hall Jan.5 to Jan. 22, 2009 and will soon be available to view at the Street Smarts web site. The posters will also be incorporated into Street Smarts marketing materials.
Each child who entered the contest received a $3 Jamba Juice gift card and a spoke reflector for their bike.
The judges, representatives of Street Smarts sponsors Novozymes, Inc., Kaiser Permanente and YoloBerry Yogurt, also chose the following semi-finalists: Tatum Kubik, a second-grader at North Davis Elementary; Amanda Liu, a third-grader at North Davis Elementary; Ana Roby, a third-grader at Korematsu Elementary; Brooke Lee, a third-grader at Cesar Chavez Elementary; Kate Lee, a fifth-grader at Korematsu Elementary; Cassie Slack, a sixth-grader at Korematsu Elementary; and Emma Levy, a sixth-grader at Korematsu Elementary.
