Toad Hollow Dog Park Lighting Project – Community Discussion

Toad Hollow Dog Park is a public dog park located in the City’s stormwater detention basin along Second Street, just west of Pole Line Road over crossing. Recently, the City Council identified the installation of lights at Toad Hollow Dog Park as a short-term focus goal, as there is currently no lighting at the dog park. The community has expressed a desire to incorporate lighting at the dog park for dog owners utilizing the area during late Fall/early Spring months when it gets dark early. The goal is to improve safety at the dog park and to keep the lighting on from dusk until 9 pm each night.

Toad Hollow was designed as a stormwater detention basin to collect rainwater overflow.  The area was later modified to include a secondary use of a dog park.  As designed, the basin does fill, often flooding the dog park during the rainy season, and has already been closed once this season due to recent rain.

Staff is in the process of determining the best location and type of lighting to use in Toad Hollow Dog Park taking into account flooding of the detention basin and potential impacts to wildlife in the area.  An integral part of the process is to invite members of the community that use the dog park to provide input on the desired lighting for this space.

As part of the community engagement process, City staff will be holding a public meeting at Toad Hollow Dog Park on Saturday, December 15, from 11am to Noon, to gather input from the community regarding the desired type of lighting and locations that will enhance the enjoyment and utilization of the dog park.

City Staff will bring a preliminary lighting plan to the meeting that takes into consideration the potential impacts to existing wildlife habitats surrounding the dog park, safety, desired use and cost. Staff hopes that the members of the community can use this preliminary plan to provide ideas, improvements, and critiques that will help guide staff to complete a cost effective design that will both meet the community needs while staying within the constraints for the site and surrounding habitat.

Bring your dog and your ideas out to the park.  If it is forecasted to rain, we will be moving the meeting to an alternate location and will send out that information the day before. If you cannot attend on Dec 15, you can email your comments to mmarshall@cityofdavis.org.
