Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration

The 25th annual City of Davis Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration will take place on Monday, January 21, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. in the Varsity Theatre, 616 Second Street. The event is free and community members are encouraged to attend. The year’s event will feature presentations and music to help commemorate the life and accomplishments of Dr. King for civil rights, peace and nonviolence. Mayor Lee states “I look forward to this tradition of our community coming together to promote mutual respect, understanding and tolerance among all people. Please join us.”
Speakers will include Gabriel Patterson, a PhD Candidate in Agriculture and Environmental Chemistry and Cindy Pickett who is a professor in the Psychology Department, Associate Vice-Provost for Faculty Equity and Inclusion at UC Davis and a school board member for the Davis Joint Unified School District. Attendees will also be treated to performances by Afrovibes, children of the Parents of African American Children Davis group reading One Today, a reading by City of Davis Poet Laureate James Lee Jobe, a singing performance by Nathalie Minya and entertainment by well-known local musician Dick Holdstock and the Davis Freedom Singers. At the conclusion of the program, the Freedom Singers will lead attendees in a symbolic “Freedom March” through downtown Davis. The program is slated to last one hour and fifteen minutes with the Freedom March following directly after, ending in the E Street Plaza.
The program is presented by the City of Davis Human Relations Commission and the City of Davis. The program will be recorded by Davis Media Access for later viewing. KDRT 95.7 FM will broadcast the event live.
