Pioneer Park Playground Recipient of Grant for Renovation

 October 17, 2017

The City of Davis is thrilled to announce that it is one of 15 cities in California selected to receive a grant sponsored through the California Park & Recreation Society (CRPS), PlayCore and Game Time. The $100,000 grant is part of a state wide healthy play initiative and will help align research based best practices to create high quality play and recreation environments.

The grant will go towards the replacement of the playground at Pioneer Park, which is over 25 years old and has reached its useful life. The renovation, which will be completed in early spring, will include new play structures for both 2 -5 year olds and 5-12 year olds including a Sky Track!  In addition, adult fitness apparatus will be added to the expanded footprint to give the space a truly intergenerational component. Adult exercise equipment has already been added to several other parks in town, such as Oxford Park, Arroyo Park and Harvest Park. This equipment is easy to use and gets a lot of use.

Emily Griswold, the Recreation and Park Commission Chairperson added, “I want to commend city staff for their proactive work to leverage city funds by seeking external grant opportunities. The addition of new playground and fitness equipment for a range of ages will be a great addition to Pioneer Park.”

Mayor Robb Davis also shared, “We are pleased to receive funding towards playground equipment that is so valued by our community as a way to socialize and play. Having these opportunities has shown to promote physical activity, provide natural social interactions and improve quality of life. This directly coincides with our council goal of ensuring a safe and healthy community.”

A community meeting will be held on Thursday, October 26 at 6:30pm at Pioneer Elementary School, 5215 Hamel St., to show renderings of the proposed park renovation and the project timeline. More information and the playground renderings can be found online at A link to choose a color scheme is also available:
