New City of Davis Police Accountability Commission to Start
After an organizational meeting on Wednesday, January 30, 2019, the City of Davis’ new Police Accountability Commission (PAC) will hold its first regular meeting on Thursday, February 7. Regular Police Accountability Commission meetings will be held the first Thursday of every month at the Davis Senior Center, 646 A Street. Start time will be at 6:30 p.m.
The commission was appointed by the City Council in December and was created at the conclusion of a community process to look at the City’s overall police oversight structure and recommend ways the City could practice 21st century policing and strengthen police-community relations.
“Public safety is a critical responsibility of local government, and I am looking forward to moving our community into a new place around police and community relations,” said Mayor Pro Tem Gloria Partida.
The key role of the PAC is to provide accountability via a variety of interactions with members of the public, the Independent Police Auditor, the Davis Police Department, and others. Main functions are to:
- Develop a community outreach plan
- Provide input, including recommended changes or improvements, to Davis Police Department policies, procedures, and training
- Review Independent Police Auditor reports on misconduct complaints
- Provide input into reports
- Assess the work of the Independent Police Auditor
Appointees to the commission include Mary Bliss, Sean Brooks, Cecilia Escamilla-Greenwald, Dillan Horton, Abram Jones, Elaine Kahan, William Kelly, Judith MacBrine, Keisha Liggett-Nichols and a UC Davis student appointment by ASUCD.
