2019 Arbor Day Celebration!
Hello Davis Community!
We are so pleased to have hosted another vibrant Arbor Day Celebration in Central Park on Saturday, March 9th, 2019. We were gifted with a deluge of rain, which made the trees very happy and the event rather memorable.
Five of the nine Arbor Day Art Contest winners came to accept their prizes and show us their beautiful creations. The Hoots made us all dance with delight in the rain, and gave a special performance of the official National Arbor Day anthem! The Pamela Trokanski dancers, crowned in wreaths of greenery, danced barefoot in the rain and illustrated how trees grow through song and movement. The Tree Circus, all the way out from North Carolina, engaged our youngest audience members in celebrating all the gifts that trees give us, while making all the adults in the audience laugh with delight. The vendors who bravely hosted their booths in the midst of the wet and cold still received waves of visitors, and the birds of the California Raptor Center were everyone's favorite display. We raised $400 for non-profit Tree Davis by raffling off wooden prizes made of lumber from urban street trees, donated by West Coast Arborists!
Cal Fire bestowed our 41st TreeCityUSA Certification and our very own Brett Lee gave the Mayoral Proclamation.
Next year, we are going to aim for an April Arbor Day Celebration to avoid the rain, because we missed the tree climbing and art contest display too much!
Any organizations or individuals that may wish to participate in next year's Arbor Day Celebration are welcome to contact Julia Jones, City of Davis Urban Forestry Supervisor, at email@example.com.
