During the month of October enjoy events, prizes, and giveaways when you bike, walk or use transit. The goal of Car Free October is to encourage people to try something new. So grab your friends and family and ride your bikes, walk to the store, and bus around town.

Elementary School Poster Contest

All Month

Participate in the 8th biannual City of Davis Street Smarts Poster Contest. Elementary school students are invited to create original artwork illustrating the fun, safe, and important role of transportation. All artwork will be included in an art show at the Davis Arts Center in December. Entries are due in late October. For more information go to Davis Streets Smarts.

Books on Bikes

Bike & Walk to School Day

October 4th- Wednesday

School children in Davis and Yolo County will be joining kids all around the world walking and biking to school on International Walk/ Bike to School Day. This is also an opportunity to thank our crossing guards for making the streets safer.

California Dream Ride Bicycle Dreamer Award Ceremony

October 9th - Monday

The California Dream Ride will be awarding the Bicycle Dreamer Award to an extraordinary bike advocate as part of the 5-day California Dream Ride. This ceremony will be held in Davis at the U.S. Bicycle Hall of Fame and is open to all. RSVP and purchase your $13.00 Burgers and Brew dinner at

Discover Davis - Bike Valet

October 10th - Tuesday

Come and have the City of Davis and Ken's Bike-Ski-Board park your bike at Discover Davis, a yearly event to welcome new residents to Davis. The Bike valet will be located within the E Street Plaza. This event will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m at E Street Plaza and between 2nd Street and 3rd Street.

UC Davis Bike Auction

October 14th - Saturday

The public is invited to attend the biannual UC Davis Bike Auction. Bike viewing from 7:30 am to 9:00 am, with bidding starting at 9:00 am. For information, call the UC Davis Transportation Services at (530) 752-BIKE (2453) or visit

Biking With Confidence

October 15th- Sunday

Pump up your bike skills and confidence! Whether your riding is rusty or you are proficient on your pedals, this class will teach you how to ride your bike in traffic, the rules of the road, and tips to become a more predictable rider.  This course is a combination of classroom and on-street instruction. Participants age 12 and older must bring a bike in good working condition, a helmet and water. See the fall Parks and Community Services Catalog to sign up. Dates are Sept. 17, Oct. 15 and Nov. 19. The cost is $19.

A Midsummer Bikes' Dream

October 15th- Sunday

Who loves Shakespeare, beer, and bikes? Well then this event is for you. Join the Davis Shakespeare Festival, Sudwerk Brewing and the City of Davis at 12:00 p.m. at Sudwerk Brewing, 2001 2nd Street. At Sudwerk everyone attending the play will receive $1 off their first drink. Together at 1 p.m. we will ride our bikes to the Veteran's Memorial Center to watch the play A Midsummer Night's Dream. Purchase your ticket to A Midsummer Night's Dream at the door for $10.00.  The play begins at 2 p.m.

UC Davis- Bike Helmets and Bagels

October 17- Tuesday

Wear a helmet? Like bagels? UC Davis is thanking people who where helmets with bagels at the UC Davis Bike Barn from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Show up with your bike helmet and receive a free bagel. This event is brought to you by the UC Davis Helmet Hair Don't Care campaign.

Fall Beauty, Bike and Brew

October 21st - Saturday

Want to help the City of Davis and Sudwerk Brewing clean-up the Old Highway 40 bike path? Meet at 1 p.m. in the In and Out parking lot, 1020 Olive Drive to ride bikes to the Old Highway 40 pathway to prune trees and pick up trash. At 3 p.m. volunteers will head back to Sudwerk Brewing, 2001 2nd Street for free pizza.

Ready Set Ride Challenge- Regional campaign to encourage your co-workers to drive alone less

Do you like to win prizes and badges for biking, walking, carpooling and riding transit to work? Organized by SACOG, the same group that gives us May is Bike Month, is a week long regional campaign focused on getting employees who drive alone to try transit, biking and walking to work. Get Your Bike Ready for fall- Bike Lights and Theft Prevention

October 25th - Wednesday

School has started and daylight savings time is nipping at our heels - let's make sure you are ready for fall. The City of Davis and Davis Bike Club are joining forces to make you more visible and help protect your bicycle from theft. We will be at the Davis Farmer's Market on October 25th from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. distributing bike lights to people without lights and bike theft abatement devices. Must have bike to participate. Prior to event install The Tile App.

Bike Party Davis

October 27th- Friday

Let’s bike party! This is a fun-for-all-ages bike ride around Davis. Decorate your bike with lights and meet at Ken’s Bike-Ski-Board, 650 G St. The ride leaves at 8 p.m. Find out more on the Bike Party Davis Facebook page.

Thank You for Riding Amtrak

The City of Davis and Capital Corridor want to thank you for riding the train. So meet us at the train station from 7:30- 9:00 a.m. to enjoy a treat and learn about taking your bike on the train or leaving your bike parked securely at the train station.

Light the Night

November 2nd- Thursday

The City of Davis and Davis Afternoon Rotary want to make sure you have a bike light before daylight savings begins. We will be giving out bike lights to people who do not have lights at an undisclosed location from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
