The City of Davis has terminated the contract with the contractor, Northern Pacific Company, on the Cannery Undercrossing project and is working with the surety (contractor’s insurance company). The contractor’s insurance company is pursuing their obligation to complete the project and is in discussions with the City to bring in a contractor to complete the remaining work. While we do not have any commitment to a date work will resume, or be completed, we believe the insurance company will be able to have the work started this summer.
The City has put up protective fencing around the project to alleviate safety concerns in this interim period. Covell is open now to four lanes of traffic and will remain that way until a contractor is hired to complete the work. Once construction resumes, traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction again over Covell Blvd in order to complete final grinding and paving. However, that portion of work and lane closure should not only last a couple of weeks.
This is a serious matter and an infrequent occurrence in Davis. However, we can assure the public that by taking these actions, the City has set in motion the means to hire a new contractor through the surety and complete the project. Unfortunately, this is not likely to be resolved quickly, but the City must act as good stewards of City resources and follow this process.
We will provide updates on the process as we gain more certainty on the work effort and timing. We acknowledge the inconvenience and impacts to the community and appreciate your patience.
