VETERANS MEMORIAL THEATRE SIDING PROJECT

The Veterans Memorial Theatre is getting a siding facelift! The Veterans Memorial Center siding was completed in 2023.

Western Red Cedar will be used for the new siding – it’s going to look amazing!

The project starts September 3 and is scheduled to be completed in February 2025.

There will be no impacts to 14^th Street or the parking lot, however this is a construction zone, so please exercise caution around the building.  The theatre and the Veterans Memorial Center will remain open during the siding project.

The Veterans Memorial Center (VMC) was originally constructed in 1973 and has needed a full interior and exterior renovation for some time. The interior renovation was completed in November 2018 and the roof replacement project was completed in July 2020. New siding was installed at the VMC in 2023.

The existing old growth redwood vertical siding is almost 50 years old and at the end of its useful life. Not only is it about 30% weather-damaged beyond repair, but numerous deficiencies have been found through the design process that need to be addressed during the siding replacement.  

The general scope of work includes:

• Addition of water-resistive barrier beneath the siding (current building lacks barrier, which has resulted in rainwater intrusion to the interior of the wall).
• Replacement of water damaged gypsum board behind the siding with new fire treated plywood.
• Replacement of siding with Vertical Grain (VG) Western Red Cedar (new-growth and old-growth redwood siding are no longer available).
• Miscellaneous improvements including fence repair and exterior beam replacement.
• The existing loading dock door will be replaced with a new, large, double-swing sound control door.

On July 19, 2022, J-Walt Construction, Inc. was awarded the contract for the VMC Siding Project, CIP ET8343. The project will begin construction in September 2024 and is scheduled to be complete in February 2025. The contractor will typically work from 7 a.m. - 4 p.m. on weekdays, excluding holidays.

The theatre and the VMC will be open during construction. During construction, there will be construction noise, dust, storage of construction equipment and materials on site, construction fencing, and some of the entrances may not be accessible at all times. Those visiting the site should be aware that there is also construction going on at North Davis Elementary School and Davis Senior High School. There may be increased traffic and congestion around the parking lot and bike paths throughout the typical construction hours.
