Benchmarks characterizes and benchmarks existing conditions at the time the Urban Forest Management Plan (UFMP) was developed in 2022. Visit each of the sections below to learn more about conditions and key challenges. Each section includes a summary of the key challenges and opportunities that were identified by collaborators. All input provided from collaborators and stakeholders was considered in the development of the UFMP. The input that was received can be explored further in the Summary of Challenges and Opportunities Identified by Collaborators.

2020 Tree Canopy and Land Cover

To better understand the location and extent of tree canopy in Davis the UFMP development process included a GIS assessment and mapping of existing canopy and other primary land cover (impervious surfaces, turf and low-lying vegetation, bare soil, and water). Navigate to the 2020 Tree Canopy and Land Cover page to explore the overall urban forest canopy including both public and private trees.

2018 City Tree Resource

The City Tree Resource is a component of the overall urban forest canopy and includes the public trees that are located on streets, rights-of-way, medians, in parks, green belts, and at City facilities. Navigate to the 2018 City Tree Resource page to learn more about the composition, structure, and benefits of the City tree resource in 2022.

Sustainability Indicators

The development of the UFMP included evaluation of industry defined sustainability indicators to assess current conditions in the urban forest resource, programming, and engagement. Based on best practices and industry standards, the indicators are a tool for evaluating the sustainability of a community’s urban forest program as defined in the Journal of Arboriculture article “A Model of Urban Forest Sustainability” (Clark et al. 1997). Navigate to the Sustainability Indicators page to see how Davis’ urban forestry programming is meeting these criteria in 2022.

Community and Collaborator Engagement

It takes a community to steward a healthy and resilient urban forest and a sustainable urban forestry program. The development process for the UFMP included a number of opportunities for stakeholders to discuss and provide input during plan development. Navigate to the Community and Collaborator Engagement page for details on the community engagement process as well as how stakeholder concerns and vision are incorporated into the UFMP.
