Landmark Trees

IMG_1084

Recognizing that the many existing trees on private property were a major asset to the community and were irreplaceable, a survey was completed in the late 1960's of all trees in Davis in order to establish the Landmark Tree List. The list now contains approximately 100 trees which were determined by resolution of the City Council met one or more of the following criteria:

  1. The tree is an outstanding specimen of a tree species
  2. The tree is one of the largest or oldest trees in Davis
  3. The tree is of historical interest
  4. The tree is an unusual species, a significant grove, or otherwise unique

Landmark Trees can be city-owned trees or privately-owned trees. Each property owner with a Landmark Tree is given a framed Resolution of Appreciation for keeping the trees healthy for current and future citizens to enjoy. It is important to note that once Landmark Tree status is granted to trees, they are protected under the City of Davis Municipal Code; and therefore, property owners must follow the pruning, removal, and protection requirements of the ordinance.

For further information related to Landmark Trees go to Chapter 37, Tree Planting, Preservation, and Protection, of the Davis Municipal Code.

To nominate a tree for Landmark status consideration, please contact the Urban Forestry Division at 530-757-5633 or CityTrees@CityofDavis.org

Trees of Significance

A Tree of Significance is a tree, including those on private property, which measures 5 inches or more in diameter at breast height (4.5 feet above ground height). Trees of Significance can be city-owned trees or privately-owned trees. Trees on single-family properties are exempt from the Tree of Significance designation unless the designation of the tree is included as part of a development agreement, conditions of approval, etc.

Not all trees of a certain size are considered to be Trees of Significance. See the Davis Municipal Code or contact the Urban Forestry Division at 530-757-5633 or CityTrees@CityofDavis.org to determine if a tree is a Tree of Significance.

Protection for Landmark Trees and Trees of Significance

The City of Davis has specific regulations in place to protect Landmark Trees and Trees of Significance. The planting, pruning, removal, or modification of the area surrounding these trees may require a permit or City review, depending on the nature of the proposed work. It is the responsibility of property owners to be aware of tree-related regulations before engaging in any activity that may impact existing trees.

Since a major portion of the commercial development in Davis is in the core area, where many of the Landmark listed and Trees of Significance are located, the remodeling or development of properties with these trees is usually contingent upon saving the trees and designing structures around them.
