LATEST INVESTIGATIVE INFORMATION
5.4.23 at 2:12 PM:
Yesterday, May 3, 2023, at approximately 3:20 pm, the Davis Police Department Dispatch Center and TIP hotline began receiving a cluster of calls regarding a person matching the suspect description that had been provided following the stabbing attack at 2nd Street and L Street. The callers reported the person had been in Sycamore Park and was wandering in the surrounding areas. Officers responded to the area as calls kept coming in and the person was eventually located at Pine Lane and Colby Drive, which is very close to where the 2nd homicide occurred. The responding officers agreed that this person, who has now been identified as 21-year-old Carlos Dominguez out of Davis, was a very close match to the suspect who had been described in the last two attacks.
Located on his person was a large fixed blade knife. Officers and detectives quickly determined that Dominguez was a “person of interest” in the recent attacks and transported him to the Police Department for further questioning after he consented to their request. Dominguez was interviewed at length and officers collected significant evidence from his person including the clothes he was wearing which appeared to be identical to the clothing description provided after the 3rd attack.
Earlier this morning, at about 1:20 am, Dominguez was booked at the Yolo County Jail for a weapons violation relating to the knife he possessed. Detectives are currently serving a related search warrant at the Davis residence where Dominguez lives. Significant and related evidence has already been discovered.
Based on the information and evidence collected so far, Dominguez was placed under arrest for 2 counts of murder for the killings of David Breaux and Karim Abou Najm; and one count of attempted murder for the stabbing attack of Kimberlee Guillory, who is recovering from her wounds. This arrest took place just after 1:00 pm today.
The City of Davis and the Davis Police Department would like to express sincere gratitude to the many regional and national law enforcement partners listed below, and all other agencies who were a critical part of this investigation and for providing a number of officers to patrol our City to keep it safe.

The Department would also like to acknowledge the assistance received from the Davis community throughout this entire investigation. Early on, the community was asked to provide information that may help solve these horrific, terrifying crimes. There were 15 tips from the area of Sycamore Park yesterday afternoon that directly resulted in the arrest of Carlos Dominguez.
“This is remarkable,” said Police Chief, Darren Pytel. “Our community should be proud of everyone who stepped up. I do believe they, and all the law enforcement personnel, especially the members of the Davis Police Department, who were involved in this investigation along the way, may have saved more lives.”
5.4.23 at 9:39 AM:
The Davis Police Department continues to have a person detained in connection with the two homicides and attempted homicide that have occurred over the last week. Because services are taking place for Karim Abou Najm, and out of an abundance of respect for his family at this time, no further details will be released until the press conference at 2:00 p.m.
The City of Davis will livestream the press conference on their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/CityofDavis/) at 2 pm. There may be a delay to the livestream depending on when the press conference starts.

Regional law enforcement agencies have been assisting, along with the FBI and Department of Justice. Police officers are on rotating 12-hour shifts and patrols have been added all over town. Police and investigators are working on three crime scenes, collecting evidence, gathering statements and going through tips.
Detectives are continuing their investigation and reviewing numerous tips and leads. Biological evidence has been collected from each of the crime scenes and early returns are being analyzed to determine potential sources; no conclusions regarding source have been made at this time.
A certified law enforcement sketch artist worked with a witness of the Karim Abou Najm homicide and drafted a sketch of a possible suspect; however, it was determined that it is not viable for use after the witness had low confidence it accurately depicted the suspect. A sketch that illustrates a misleading representation of a suspect could lead to the false apprehension of an innocent person.
The Davis Police Department is aware that a great deal of inaccurate information and false suspect images have been shared through different social media platforms. We would like to remind the community that the best sources for getting accurate information regarding the investigation are from official sources such as the Davis Police Department, City Facebook pages, or reliable news sources. The Davis Police Department is committed to providing timely, accurate information.

May 3: Update
After conducting outreach and surveying the unhoused clients accessing services in and around their site, Davis Community Meals and Housing (DCMH) quickly determined additional clients were willing to accept temporary shelter during this period. DCMH notified the City of Davis they could expand emergency overnight sheltering capacity from four beds to 24 beds in total to meet the need. Paul’s Place, DCMH’s full service development with emergency transitional and permanent supportive housing, was identified as one of two locations for expansion. The site, which typically provides four emergency beds, created 10 additional beds in response to the crisis. Two additional staff members were assigned to oversee overnight operations. HEART of Davis and the new Davis Community Action Network (CAN) were also recruited to provide meals and materials respectively. DCMH re-opened the 5th Street site in Davis recently used as the congregate Winter Emergency Shelter location. This site is equipped with 10 beds, and two staff members were assigned to oversee this operation. The site was also supplied with meals by HEART of Davis (materials were already secured).
Last night, 20 previously unsheltered people were sheltered by DCMH, and served by HEART and CAN. We continue to outreach to the unhoused community and based on their feedback, the current expansion is sufficient to meet the need. Two local hotels and two local nonprofit service providers also stepped forward with offers to secure motel rooms if there is need for additional capacity.
The unhoused community is also receiving support from a variety of local homeless services providers operating in Davis. CommuniCare Daytime Respite Center remains open 7:30 am – 4 pm, Monday – Saturday to offer connection to case management services, showers, laundry, a rest area and staff to provide mental health support. Downtown Streets Team, a volunteer employment program recently launched in Davis, provides camaraderie, basic life skills training, case management and support to cohort of unhoused people seeking to stabilize their circumstances.
We are asking that the community, rather than providing direct outreach to our unhoused neighbors, reach out to DCMH or the Daytime Respite Center to offer support and resources> Click here for: the DCMH Wish List, the Respite Center Wish List, the Respite Center Volunteer Flyer or the Social Services Guide. The community can also email HOutreach@cityofdavis.org to be noticed about opportunities to help as they become available. The suspect is still at-large; though people mean well, the Davis Police Department has asked the community to wait for word about the coordinated response. And as you can imagine, our homeless community is leery of being approached by unknown people, even if it’s for help.
Staff is monitoring the response and anticipates the operation will continue for at least the next week (5/2-5/9), dependent upon available resources and the result of the ongoing investigation. Additional resources will be necessary to continue the operation, particularly to support the staffing expansion at DCMH, and an approximate budget is being developed. Consistent communication between the Davis PD, city staff, local service providers and stakeholders is ongoing and is the backbone of this short-term response.
May 2: Unsheltered Community Plan
The City of Davis, in partnership and cooperation with Davis Community Meals and Housing, as well as the many local providers who work with unsheltered individuals in the community, has developed and put into motion a plan to provide emergency shelter for individuals in need.
The City will be providing approximately two dozen emergency beds, as well as meals, for individuals willing to be sheltered indoors. Davis Community Meals and Housing was able to call on its staff who assisted with the previous cold weather shelter to assist with the current emergency shelter needs. Davis Community Meals and Housing will be providing capacity at Paul’s Place and the 5th Street location.
In addition, Davis CAN, a new local organization dedicated to affordable housing and the climate change, is assisting with donations, and HEART of Davis is providing meals. The Daytime Respite Center is also adding staffing during daytime hours to speak with and connect resources to the unsheltered. There is also a mobile mental health team and providers to help engage with this community.
Both the City and local providers made outreach visits today to several campsites to encourage people to take shelter. Some individuals preferred to stay outdoors but are planning to be in groups for safety purposes. Providers will continue to check in with people at these locations.
