EPA Reg #: No. 2217-643-7001
Pesticide Type: Herbicide
City Use Type: Tier 1. Most Hazardous. Most Restrictive. All areas are closed to the public during applications.
Target Pests: Clover and various broadleaf weeds
Justification for Use: The turf surrounding the pool areas are infested with clover and various weed species, attracting stinging insects and creating unsafe recreational conditions for groups attending swim lessons and activities. The proposed application will control a variety of broadleaf weeds and supply the turf with 16-6-8 fertilizer to grow and help out compete future weed generation. Parks staff have attempted cultural means of abatement near the pool, but the viability of the seeds even when hand-pulled at the root, only serves to spread the issue to surrounding turf areas.
Explanation of IPM Methods Used: Staff is managing all other parts of the facility, including the remaining turf, without herbicide and doing so with great success. Mulch and hand weeding are used exclusively for all planter boxes, sidewalk cracks are scraped with hand tools, park edges and road frontages are mowed/trimmed and turf is managed to resist clover.
Strategies to Prevent Future Applications: In tandem, the herbicide-fertilizer application will contribute to desirable turf growth while minimizing clover infestation. After this application, Staff will be better positioned to manage site conditions with non-chemical methods. Additionally, Staff will strategically over-seed and top-dress the turf to diminish the undesirable grass and weed species throughout the site.
