NOTE: This application has been rescheduled to Friday, September 23, 2022 based on current weather conditions.
Notice: This herbicide application is justified to control an outbreak of highly invasive Silver Leaf Nightshade in a city-owned agricultural field. This is a noxious weed prioritized for control by Yolo County and CDFA. The City has a responsibility to act quickly to control this invasive pest while the population is still low and control is achievable. The nightshade plant is poisonous to livestock and spreads easily in cultivated fields due to the fact it can reproduce from plant and root parts. Hand and mechanical removal are not effective on this pest.
Locations to spray: east edge of western field by cell tower – no public access
Pesticides: Milestone, aminopyralid: (Triisopropanolammonium salt of 2-pyridine carboxylic acid, 4-amino-3,6-dichloro- 40.6%)
Target Pest: Silver Leaf Nightshade (Solanum elaeagnifolium)
Explanation of IPM Methods Used: The infestation was discovered recently and is currently being monitored. Early detection and rapid removal are critical parts of our IPM program.
Strategies to Prevent Future Applications: The herbicide will control established plants and provide some pre-emergent control of the weeds. Follow-up applications for a second and third year are highly recommended to ensure control because the root system is large and plants can re-emerge after a single application.
The areas will be posted with the intent to spray, and after application, as required in the city's Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Program Policies and Procedures.
More information on the IPM Program, including the current Policies and Procedures guidance, can be found on the city's webpage: Integrated Pest Management
