Bicycle Curriculum

Bikeology is a ready-to-use bicycle-safety curriculum for physical education teachers and recreation specialists working with students in grades 6-12. This curriculum (part 1 and part 2) is aligned with the National Standards for K-12 Physical Education and includes lessons and assessments for the skills and knowledge students need to enjoy a lifetime of safe bicycling.

This national award-winning Safe Routes For Kids education program is a comprehensive two-part program that teaches bicycle safety education and transportation alternatives and solutions. The Bicycle Safety Program curriculum (found here) teaches traffic savvy through classroom activities and on-the-bike skills practice. Ten cycle safety lessons, lasting 55 to 60 minutes each, are provided in this book. Of the ten lessons, four are in-class and six are on-the-bicycle. The lessons are developed to be taught on consecutive days but can be taught over the course of multiple weeks.

This document was created by the California Department of Education’s California Healthy Kids and After School Resource Center for the California Safe Routes to School Technical Assistance Resource Center. Through this series of nine lessons, based on Safe Routes to School program elements, fourth and fifth grade students will learn how to be safe pedestrians and bicyclists and understand the positive impacts that walking and bicycling have on their health and the environment. The curriculum emphasizes the importance of physical activity and pedestrian and bicycle safety skills while encouraging students to develop healthy habits that benefit both their physical and academic development.
