Frequently Asked Questions

What if I do not have room for an organics cart?
Most wastes are either be recyclable or compostable. Once customers start sorting wastes into the correct cart, they may be able to downsize the size of their garbage cart and free up extra space for the organics cart. Customers can also call Recology Davis (530-756-4646) to request a 35 or 65-gallon organics cart instead of the default 95-gallon size. Single-Family property owners can call the Finance Department (530-757-5651) to request a smaller garbage cart. Businesses can contact Recology Davis (530-756-4646) to reduce their garbage service. Customers can submit a waiver to request an exemption from recycling and/or organic waste collection due to a lack of physical space. Learn more about recycling and organic waste collection service waivers.

Can I “opt-out” of the program, “share-a-can” with neighbors and/or receive a variable rate charge—similar to garbage rates?
Customers that want to return their organics carts will not receive a rate adjustment and per the statewide organic waste regulations are still required to keep organic wastes out of the landfill. Per the state law, customers that wish to share an organics cart with their neighbor, haul their own organic wastes, or receive a waiver based on minimal organic waste generation or a lack of physical space for an organics cart may request permission the City to do so.  Learn more about recycling and organic waste collection service waivers.

What about odors, and pests associated with the organics carts?
Organic waste collection program does not introduce additional food scraps to be placed at the curb for collection, it simply changes which cart the food scraps are placed in. The program does not create any new pest, odor or health hazards that are not already present in standard municipal trash. Currently, many customers place food scraps in their garbage carts in plastic bags to avoid issues with pests and odors. When placing food scraps in your organics cart begins, bagging food scraps in compostable or paper bags, placing them in cereal boxes, etc. before placing them in the organics cart will achieve the same results.

What if I have more yard material than can fit in my organics cart?
Yard materials placed in the organics carts will be collected every week. Additional organics carts can be requested for a fee. Any excess yard material the rest of the year can be composted, used as mulch or hauled away by the customer or a landscape maintenance company. On-street collection of yard materials in piles is also an option during certain times of the year.

Are there ways to reduce yard clippings?
Yes! Here are a few simple ways:

What about my holiday tree?
Smaller holiday trees can be placed in the organics cart (the lid must close). Larger trees may need to be cut in half or have the branches trimmed in order to fit into the cart. On-street collection of yard materials in piles is also an option during certain times of the year.
