American Red Cross Lifeguard Training

Throughout the year we offer certified lifeguard training. This certification teaches how to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. Participants must attend all scheduled sessions and pass the skills/written tests in order to receive certifications. Payment of the course fee is not a guarantee of certification. Participants must turn 15 by the last day of the course.

Lap Swimming

Eight lap lanes are available for up to 16 swimmers at Pools for fitness/lap swimming. Swimmers must be at least 14 years of age and have an advance reservation before entering the pool complex. Only registered swimmers will be permitted inside the pool complex. No waitlist will be maintained for lap swimming. Water Aerobics

Take the plunge and check out this low-impact workout that builds your endurance and increases your muscle strength. Pre-registration is required for all participants entering the pool complex. Enroll for water aerobics by clicking on WATER AEROBICS.

Junior Lifeguarding

The American Red Cross Junior Lifeguarding course focuses on building a foundation of knowledge, attitudes, and skills of future lifeguards. Emphasis will be placed on prevention of aquatic accidents, fitness & swimming skills, response in an emergency, leadership skills, and professionalism. This course does not certify participants in lifeguarding but does certify them in CPR.

Prerequisites:

Participants must be able to demonstrate the following skills:

  • Swim the front crawl for 25 yards continuously while breathing to the front or side.
  • Swim the breaststroke for 25 yards using a pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence.
  • Tread water for 1 minute using arms and legs.
  • Show a level of comfort on the back by floating on the back for 30 seconds or swimming on the back for 25 yards using the elementary backstroke or back crawl.
  • Submerge and swim a distance of 10 feet under water.

The prerequisite skills evaluation will occur on the first day of the course. Participants who do not pass the skills evaluation will not be able to continue with the course.

Participants who successfully complete the course requirements will receive a certificate of completion and an American Red Cross CPR certification

Junior Swim Instructor

Participants will build leadership skills and learn how to successfully teach children swimming skills. In addition to completing land and water training, participants will shadow current Swim Instructors. This program is for those who are interested in working for the City of Davis Aquatics program in the future. Volunteer opportunities are available for participants who successfully complete the land, water and shadow trainings. More information about volunteer opportunities will be shared during class.
